The purpose of the Department of Lands, Planning and the Environment is to facilitate sustainable development in the Territory. The Department supports the NT Planning Commission to develop effective land use plans so that our communities can develop in a strong and vigorous way. The Department provides land to meet present and future demands and looks after Crown land until it is required for development.
We maintain and grow the Territory's reference information about property boundaries, features and land ownership. We control and enforce standards for land development and buildings to ensure that they can withstand the local climate and are efficient and healthy to live in. We work with the community to conserve and promote the Territory's natural and cultural heritage.
The Department also provides corporate support to the NT Environment Protection Agency (NTEPA).
Land Services ensures land and related information is available for the sustainable economic development of the Territory. It provides development assessment and building control, government land information, land administration and land release.
The Land Development division is delivering an integrated whole of government focus to the development of the Northern Territory that maximises opportunities for successful growth.
The NT Planning Commission is bringing a renewed focus on strategic planning for the Territory, one that enables sustainable growth of our cities and towns as great places to live, and ensures that planning reflects the expectations of the community.
