About Us

The purpose of the Department of Lands, Planning and the Environment is to facilitate sustainable development in the Territory. The Department supports the NT Planning Commission to develop effective land use plans so that our communities can develop in a strong and vigorous way. The Department provides land to meet present and future demands and looks after Crown land until it is required for development.

We maintain and grow the Territory's reference information about property boundaries, features and land ownership. We control and enforce standards for land development and buildings to ensure that they can withstand the local climate and are efficient and healthy to live in. We work with the community to conserve and promote the Territory's natural and cultural heritage.

The Department also provides corporate support to the NT Environment Protection Agency (NTEPA).
